Lee Roy Campbell

Lee Roy Campbell (LeRoy) was born on August 5, 1950, to the parentage of Rev. William Esther (Buddy) and Mrs. Lillie Mae (Cookie) Shy Campbell. He died June 26, 2025.

At an early age, LeRoy dedicated his life to the Lord and was baptized. He joined Springfield Baptist Church.

LeRoy graduated from Washington Park School in 1970. During high school, LeRoy participated in several sports. He was known as an exceptional football player; mainly noted as a great defensive back and the wide receiver with “Glue-like” hands.

After graduation, LeRoy began his work career, which included Bibb Manufacturing Company in Juliette, Mobil Chemical in Covington, Griffin Technical College, where he was a driver instructor, Jasper County Board of Education as a bus driver and a very dedicated driver of Jimmy and Melissa, Horton for Springfield Baptist Church.

Upon relocating in Covington, LeRoy joined Bethlehem Baptist Church under watch care, during the time that Rev. Hezekiah Benton served as pastor. He was a vital member of the Bethlehem Male Chorus until his health began to decline and he could no longer get to worship service on a regular basis.

LeRoy was an avid sports fan. He had a passion for horse racing, especially the Triple Crown; Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. He also spent many Sunday afternoons, cheering on the Atlanta Falcons.

LeRoy loved traveling and was a food connoisseur. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family; especially when he could sit around and listen to all of the comments regarding his famous bar-b-que.

Later in life, LeRoy became a resident of Westbury Home in Jackson. Anytime someone visited LeRoy, it was not unusual for him to be sitting reading his Bible. On Thursday, June 26, 2025, if writing a book, LeRoy could have pinned the words of Apostle Paul where he wrote in 2 Timothy 4:7, I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

LeRoy is preceded in death by his loving parents, Rev William E. and Lillie M. Campbell and one brother; James “Hubby” Campbell.

He leaves a huge legacy for his family and friends.

He is survived by his son, Jasper (Erin) Campbell of Conyers; two brothers, Chester L. Campbell of Covington, Pastor Preston W. Campbell (Evangelist Sharon) and one sister Dr. Angela C. Gordon (Stanley) all of Monticello; one granddaughter, Journei Campbell of Conyers, two aunts Lynda Wise of Monticello, and Susie Lewis of Atlanta, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Final arrangements entrusted to Smith and Son Funeral Home, 923 Funderburg Drive, Monticello, Ga 31064; 706-468-6625 www.smithandsonsfuneralhomemonticello.com
