MEMORIAL DAY
Next Monday, May 26 is Memorial Day, a day to honor America’s fallen soldiers. The Monticello Community Band will offer a concert on Monday and members of the American Legion have been busy placing flags on the graves of veterans in West View and South View cemeteries. The Legionnaires also place white crosses around the Monticello Veterans Memorial, each with a deceased veteran’s name. The crosses are on display now, and will remain there through Monday.
The Monticello Community Band will present its annual Memorial Day concert on Monday, May 26, featuring a selection of patriotic music to honor the nation’s fallen service members. The event will begin with a community picnic at 6 p.m. on the lawn of Thomas Persons Hall, followed by a free concert at 7 p.m. American Legion Post 110 will conduct a flag-raising ceremony to mark the official start of the concert. Members will also share stories between pieces. “This annual tradition brings our community together to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day through music and reflection,” said Jehan El-Jourbagy, director of the Monticello Community Band. The Monticello Historical Foundation will offer hot plate dinners for $7 during the picnic portion of the event. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or picnic blankets and may decorate their spaces with patriotic themes if desired.
The concert is free and open to the public. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be inside Thomas Persons Hall, 319 College Street.
