Jasper Co. Library Expands Access With Solar Tech

By Stephanie Norris

The Jasper County Library, part of the Azalea Regional Library System, is stepping confidently into the future with a series of technology upgrades designed to expand access, promote sustainability, and better serve the diverse needs of the local community.

The most eye-catching addition is the new Sunbolt Velocity Solar Workstation, an outdoor solar-powered station offering 24/7 device charging and free Wi-Fi. Funded through a Digital Connectivity Grant from the Georgia Public Library Service, the workstation features a 700-watt solar array, overhead LED lighting, fast-charging USB-A/USB-C ports, 120V power outlets, and a durable, ADA-accessible design. Built from eco-conscious materials and engineered to withstand extreme weather, the workstation supports both connectivity and sustainability goals.

“Jasper’s infrastructure and needs made it an ideal first location for the Solar Workstation,” said Steven Daniel, IT Manager for the Azalea Regional Library System. “We hope to add this feature to additional Azalea libraries in the very near future.”

And that’s just the beginning.

Over the past several months, the Jasper County Library has introduced several more upgrades aimed at enhancing access and improving the patron experience:

●Visually Impaired Workstations – Public computers now include 27-inch monitors and accessibility tools such as screen readers, magnifiers, and high-contrast settings.

●Self-Checkout Kiosk – A quick and convenient way to check out items independently.

●Georgia Gateway Kiosk – Available at all Azalea Libraries, this easy-to-use kiosk lets patrons apply for, renew, and manage benefits for programs like SNAP, Medicaid, WIC, PeachCare for Kids®, TANF, and CAPS—connecting residents to essential services, right from their local branch.

●RFID Security Gates (coming August 2025) – A modernized system to improve item tracking and streamline operations.

Even the seating got a refresh. The Person’s Pavilion and Person’s Sitting Area now feature brand-new furniture, creating a more comfortable, welcoming space for reading, relaxing, or catching up with friends.

With all these new additions and a full calendar of events for all ages, the Jasper County Library is a true community hub. Whether you’re here for storytime, book clubs, tech help, or just a quiet spot to unwind, there’s something for everyone.
