Cougars Return to Action With Wins

Spring break seems to have re-energized the Piedmont Academy baseball.

The Cougars were back on the field April 9 with a 15-0 region win against Mount de Sales at home. Piedmont jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning and closed out the win after the fourth.

The team then defeated Heritage Prep 10-0 on April 10, once again needing just four innings to secure the win.

It was a balanced offensive attack as Jamus Wingate, Alex Statham and Ethan Barman drove in two runs while Tyler Griswell and Noah Doolittle both had an RBI.

Kooper Pounds earned the win working all five innings allowing no hits and striking out 11.

The Cougars traveled to Macon for another contest with Mount de Sales last Friday, this time taking an 11-2 win.

Wingate was 2-for-3 with a double and run while Zach Simmons was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Statham finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Brayden Ross had a big day at the plate driving in three runs. Jack Adams finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs.

Chase Taylor contributed to the big day offensively with a hit, run scored and RBI.

Adams had three stolen bases while Wingate, Griswell and Taylor each had two. Simmons and Statham both had one stolen base.

Nick Gervasio worked the first five innings with five strikeouts before Doolittle closed out the two innings with three strikeouts.

PIedmont (10-8, 2-3) was not able to get by Stratford Academy on Tuesday of this week. The host Eagles used a six-run second inning to take control of the contest.

Griswell and Adams drove in two runs for the Cougars while Simmons had a monster day at the plate going 4-for-4 with a double and two runs. Ross and Wingate both drove in runs.

Gervasio pitched the first 4.2 innings recording seven strikeouts. Statham recorded a strikeout in relief.

“We continue to get better each week and have put together several good games,” said Coach Casey Moody. The guys have a great mindset and attitude going into the last half of our season, We are looking forward to the next several weeks.”

Piedmont will be at home on today for a rematch with the Stratford Academy Eagles in region play at 4 p.m.
