Lady Cougars Look to Rebuild
In recent seasons the Piedmont Academy softball program has been near or on top of the GIAA mountain.
As the 2025 season approaches, however, long-time mentor Joe Johnson has to say the word most coaches don’t like uttering: rebuilding.
“We are going to be young,” Johnson said. “It will be a rebuilding season for us. With only one returning starter it will be interesting.”
The Lady Cougars have already had a handful of preseason practices but Johnson said it is too early to make many conclusions on how the team will be.
The recent alignment by the GIAA to put Piedmont in the same region as such schools as John Milledge, Tattnall Square, First Presbyterian, Mount de Sales and Stratford will certainly be a challenge to the 2025 team.
Piedmont is set to begin the new season on August 5 at George Walton Academy in Monroe. The team will then host Brentwood on August 6 before traveling to Bethlehem Christian Academy on Aug. 7.
The Lady Cougars will also compete in the Strong Rock Christian Diamond Day tournament August 9 taking part in multiple contests.
Despite the question marks for the 2025 team, Johnson said he is confident the players will continue to work hard to maintain the successful tradition from the past several seasons. Piedmont was 7-3 in region play last fall and posted 19 overall wins.
