Alice Faye Nunley Rakes
Alice Faye Nunley Rakes, age 86, of Monticello, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2025 at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle.
Alice Rakes was born in Catlettsburg, Ky., on July 1, 1938, to Wilson Fredrick (1908-1991) and Maude Rice Nunley (1911-1994).
She graduated from Ceredo-Kenova High School in 1956. On October 15th of that same year, she eloped with her sweetheart, Larry Eugene Rakes (1938-2016) of Kenova, W.Va. Alice and Larry were sweet on each other from the age of 13 when Larry, a newspaper boy, delivered the paper to her house. When he saw her, he said to her brother, “Who is that good-looking girl that answered the door?” It was true love from that day forward.
Alice’s parents, five older siblings, and her husband, Larry, all preceded her in death.
Alice was blessed with three daughters: Pamela Lea Carter (John) of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Lisa Faye Kelly (Paul) of Monticello, and Deanna Dawn Rakes, also of Monticello. Her grandchildren are CWO4 Matthew Townsend of Goose Creek, S.C.; Marc Townsend of Opelika, Alabama; Laura Carter Duplantis (Cole) of Scott, Louisiana; Neal Carter (Carolyn) of Nolensville, Tenn., and Hunt Kelly and Colt Kelly of Monticello. Great-grandchildren are Shelby, Harrison, and Andrew Townsend of Goose Creek, S.C.; Addison Duplantis of Scott, La.; Ava Lynn and Lily Townsend of Opelika, Ala.; and Miller Carter of Nolensville, Tenn.
Alice was a devout Christian who was active in the church her whole life. She enjoyed singing in the choir, attending and teaching Sunday school, being active in the Women’s ministry, and working with the children and youth. Both Alice and Larry were members of Shiloh Baptist Church in Newborn, where they served as greeters for worship.
A graveside service will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025 at 2 p.m. Rev. Danny Sorrells will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances in honor of Alice may be given to Abbey Hospice, 215 Azalea Court, Social Circle, Ga. 30025.
