Owenby To Serve 10 Years

Wayne Lee Owenby, Jr. was sentenced to 10 years to serve in confinement Tuesday in Jasper Supeior Court on a negotiated plea to homicide by vehicle in the first degree. The plea is a result from his involvement in a December 31, 2022 vehicle collison.

Mr. Owenby had six other charges that were nolle prossed including homicide by vehicle in first degree, hit and run, reckless driving, racing on the highways, failure to maintain lane, and driving on the wrong side of roadway. He was arrested January 3, 2023 and has remained incarcerated in the Jasper County jail since that time. He was credited with time served until his sentencing on Tuesday.

Daylon Norwood, 19, was killed in that collision which occuured as a result of Mr. Owenby allegedly racing Matthew Allan Boring along Hwy. 212.

Mr. Owenby was ordered to pay $3,610 to the family of the deceased and $452 to the Georgia Crime Victims Compensation Program.

Mr. Boring, who is also charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, hit and run, reckless driving, and racing on highways or streets, was on the court calendar as well. His case was not reviewed as he has changed legal counsel.

Several other cases were reviewed Tuesday by Judge Stephen Bradley and the results will be published in next week’s edition of The News.
