Cougars Back in Action Friday

Last week’s weather turned out to be the primary opponent for the Piedmont Academy varsity football.

The Cougars were scheduled to host Heritage of Newnan on Friday but with Hurricane Helene looking, the game was moved back to Wednesday.

As the Heritage team was on its way to Monticello for the game, the Hawks head coach contacted Piedmont athletic director Danny Camp and said his headmaster had told the team to not make the trip due to concerns over weather conditions that night.

The schools tried to reschedule the game again but a date could not be worked out. Officially, Heritage forfeited the game and agreed to play in Monticello in 2025.

“We hated not being able to get the game in, but sometimes it works out that way,” Camp said. “We appreciate them being willing to come back here in 2025 which actually will help us with another home game.”

Piedmont is now 5-1 overall. The matchup with Heritage was not a region contest.

The Cougars returned to work this week in preparation for their game this Friday in Monroe against George Walton Academy (4-3. 3-1). It will be a key region matchup for both programs.

Piedmont and GWA have a long history of taking part in key football games against each other.

During the 1980s the Cougars and Bulldogs engaged in numerous games often with region titles on the line.

In 1981 and 1982, Piedmont won both contests before GWA won in 1983, 1984 and 1985. The Cougars got on back with wins in 1986, 1987 and 1988 with the Bulldogs winning in 1989.

Quarterback AJ Dillard is the leading passer and rusher for GWA. The sophomore has passed for 771 yards and nine touchdowns while rushing for 622 with eight scores.

Mason Tumlin leads the Piedmont offense with 513 yards on the ground with six touchdowns. Quarterback Hunter Cleveland has thrown for 684 yards and eight scores.

“This will be a big test for us,” coach Clint Satterfield said. “There are a big school with not many weaknesses. We will need to find a way to execute on offense.”

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
