Susan Jane Stubbs
Susan Jane Stubbs was born on February 17, 1936, on the island of New Providence, Bahamas. She was the only child of George Pinder and Rowena Ferguson.
Susan Jane Stubbs received her primary and secondary education at the Western Junior and Western Senior Schools, New Providence, Bahamas. She earned her teacher’s certificate from The Bahamas Teacher’s College (later merged as part of the new University of the Bahamas, New Providence).
In 1965, as an advocate for education, Susan rented an annex of Missionary Baptist Church, and opened a small private school, Hay Street East Evening School. After an island-wide outbreak of polio in 1968, she closed the school.
The tourist industry swiftly became the main source of revenue for many residents with the opening of three large hotels, The Nassau Beach, The Emerald Beach and The Holiday Inn. Susan entered the hotel business and was elevated to a supervisor. Her heart was still in education, so she earned her Bachelor of Science degree at the New York University, Arts and Science division.
Susan moved to Monticello, in 2017. She loved Monticello. In 2020 she trained to serve as a substitute teacher at the ripe age of 84. She was alert, participated in the whole week of training, and made new friends with young trainees, along with the two amazing trainers. She inquired about the students every day; in spite of the fact, she was not called upon to actually lead a class.
Susan Jane Stubbs served the Lord in New Providence, Bahamas, New York, N.Y. and Monticello, Ga. Susan served willingly as a Sunday School teacher, writer and director for children’s Christmas and Easter productions from 1980-2017. Susan was a bona fide singer. Susan sang in the choir, taught the youth music groups, traveled throughout the United States with her fellow choir members. She also worked each week in the clothing pantry.
Susan Jane Stubbs was the mother of six daughters and one son: Mrs. Wendy Suzette Moreland, Mrs. Paulette Valeria Dean (Hesketh), Dr. Donna Marie Calix, Mrs. Pamela Anne Horton (James), Mrs. Loretta Jane Nathan (Philip), Ms. Lesley Anne Stubbs and Dr. Desmond Dion Stubbs.
Susan Jane Stubbs was blessed with 18 grandchildren: Nicole Kemp, Philip Kemp (Natalie), Andrea Dean, Adrian Dean (Olivia), Andre Calix, Saria Holmes, Tonya Holmes, Toni Calix, Keala Seon, Kyle Seon, Philip Nathan, II (Emerald), David Nathan, Rachel Nathan, LeVerne Palacious, Khiri Stubbs, Desdemona Stubbs, Tessa Verbal and Sarafina Stubbs.
Susan Jane Stubbs’ nine great-grandchildren are: Shavon Santa (Ramon), Tialaya Jones, Serenity Jones, Lerrill Jones, Roman Demarco and Renzo Demarco, Genesis Dean, Justice Dean, Philip Nathan, III; and one great-great-grandson, Kaiden Santa.
Susan Jane Stubbs’ love for children and her desire to see all children succeed led her to adopt/and or nurture Suzy, Yorick, Monique, Keitrick and Zamira.
Susan Jane Stubbs was preceded in death by her parents and her first born, and first son-in-law, Mrs. Wendy Suzette and Ian Moreland.
Susan Jane Stubbs passed away on September 9, 2024 at the age of 88 years and seven months.
Funeral service will be held in the sanctuary of Saint James A.M.E. Church, 514 Funderburg Drive, Monticello, on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 11 am. Burial service takes place in the South View Cemetery.
