Cougars Fall for First Time This Season

Piedmont Academy football coach Clint Satterfield knew last Friday would be a challenge for his team.

The Cougars were hosting fellow undefeated team Lakeview Academy from Gainesville in the 2024 region opener. The Lions had run through their first three opponents with little trouble.

By the time the final horn sounded at Cougar Field, Lakeview had managed to hold on for a 28-20 win against Piedmont. It was the most competitive matchup of the season for the Lions.

“We played tough but we had some costly turnovers,” Satterfield said.

The Cougars took a 6-0 lead after Hunter Cleveland connected with Mason Tumlin during the opening drive of the game.

After Lakeview evened the score, Cleveland threw another touchdown pass, this time to Jack Adams.

An interception pick six gave Lakewiew a 14-13 lead at halftime.

The Lions (4-0. 1-0) took a two-score lead before Cleveland made his third touchdown pass of the game. Corbett Crews hauled in this score to cut the deficit to 28-20.

“We had a defensive stop and a chance to tie it but turned it over on downs to end the game,” Satterfield said. “Lakeview is a good team and we need to work on our running game and protect our quarterback more moving forward.

Cleveland finished 14-of-27 for 234 yards and three scores. Tumlin and Hunter Thomson were the team’s leading rushers.

Adams was the team’s leading receiver with 97 yards and five catches.

Tumlin also had four receptions for 52 yards while Camden Moss had three catches for 48 yards. Ethan Barman had a 25-yard catch while Crews and Thomson also had receptions.

Defensively, Daniel Joseph had five solo tackles with two assists. Silas Cowan finished with five solo stops, four assists and four tackles for a loss. Braxton Floyd added five solo tackles with two assists and a tackle for loss.

Tumlin and Tyler McVey both had three solo tackles with four assists. Owen Piedra made three solo stops and one interception while Crews had two solo and two assists. Kohen Burrell contributed on the defensive side of the football with a solo tackle, two assists and an interception.
