Canes Put in Work for Scrimmage
The Monticello Hurricane football program welcomed Crawford County High to town for a scrimmage last week.
The format of the game included the first three quarters between the two varsity squads in regular game format, followed by a full quarter of junior varsity action.
The game started out with some strong defensive play on the part of the Canes. On the first play, Crawford threw a pass into the flats that was deflected by Tyrin Epps. The next play was a big defensive stop in the backfield by Cam Farley and Garyson Manning. After a completed pass gave the Eagles a first down, the next play senior Demonte Greene made a read on another pass, stepped between the ball and the receiver, and took it to the house for a score from 40-yards out.
On the Canes first offensive drive of the game, they ran a 12 play drive, moving 70-yards downfield to paydirt. The drive capper was a 34-yard catch and run pass from M.J. Maddox to Jamarkus Thomas. Jalen Stewart also had a big run on the drive, taking an option pitch and motoring 25 yards for a first down to move the Hurricanes into the red zone. The extra point after the touchdown by kicker Angel Martin-Garcia was good, and put the Hurricanes up 13-0. The final score of the varsity portion of the game on an 11-yard off tackle run by Stewart. The Eagles added one more score with time waning.
During the JV period, Crawford was able to push across a score. The Hurricane offense, although able to move the ball, was only able to run about ten plays.
