Cougars Are Working Towards New Season

With the first regular season game set for Friday, Aug. 16, the Piedmont Academy football team has moved into a higher gear in terms of preparations.

The Cougars began working in shoulder pads and helmets this week as allowed by the GIAA calendar.

Coach Clint Satterfield said the team competed in some 7-on-7 events in June and did well in those.

Piedmont will travel to Flint River Academy on August 9 for a preseason scrimmage against the defending Class A state champions. Satterfield said he had hoped to play Flint River during the regular season but since that could not be worked out that he and coach Kirk Hoffman went with the preseason event.

“Coach Hoffman and I coached together in the 90s at Henry County,” Satterfield said.

Hoffman led the Alcovy High School program in Covington for a decade before directing the Flint River Academy program in 2016, During his tenure with the Wildcats, Hoffman has won three state titles and finished as runner-up once.

The 2023 Flint River team finished a perfect 12-0.

That scrimmage will help Piedmont prepare for the regular season, Satterfield said.

“We are excited about our potential,” the Cougar head coach said. “Our numbers are about where they usually are and we think the schedule gives us a chance to be competitive.”

Piedmont’s regular season opener will be August 16 at home against Thomas Jefferson Academy.
