Leroy Wood

Leroy Wood, age 85, of Shady Dale, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at his residence.

Leroy Wood was born in Dahlonega, Ga. to the late Elbert Asbury Wood and Missie Mae Tuggle Wood. His family moved to Jasper County from Dahlonega in the early 1960s.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Charles Wood, Thomas Eugene “Gene” Wood, Jane Haddock, Carol Wages and Ruth Pope.

Leroy enjoyed working with wood and enjoyed making bird houses. He loved John Wayne movies, listening to old country music, keeping his grass cut with his John Deere lawn mower and working in his garden every year.

Before retirement, Leroy worked as a heavy equipment operator for Champion Logging in Shady Dale.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Dorothy Turner Wood of Shady Dale; children, Terry Wood (Tracey Gilman) of Shady Dale, Donna Bailey (Duane Davis) of Covington, Tina (Clint) Voyles of Abbeville and Lisa Wood of Shady Dale; grandchildren, C. J. Voyles, Kristen Voyles, Nicole (Terry) Kleebatt, Nicholas Bailey and Jennifer Harvey; great-grandchildren, Johnathan Voyles, Jade Voyles, Hunter Voyles, Easton Voyles, Taylor Voyles, Ryan Denham and McKenzie Kemp; sister, Mary Shupe of Milledgeville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Providence Baptist Church in Shady Dale. Interment was in the church cemetery. Rev. Ed Westbrook officiated. Pallbearers were Maylon Wages, Clint Voyles, C. J. Voyles, Johnathan Voyles, Kevin Champion and Steven Champion.
