Diamond Cougars Fall to Gatewood
The latest chapter in the decades-old rivalry between Piedmont Academy and Gatewood did not go in the Cougars’ favor.
Gatewood took an 11-2 win on March 12 using a six-run fourth inning to take control of the contest. The Gators led 2-1 after the third inning before the six-run top of the fourth.
Piedmont’s offense was never able to get on track as the Cougars finished with just four hits. Gatewood, meanwhile, compiled 14.
Zach Simmons had a hit and RBI for Piedmont while Jack Adams had one hit and scored two runs. Chase Taylor had a hit and RBI and Jake Jenkins also had one hit.
Adams had three stolen bases while Simmons and Ethan Barman had one each.
Alex Statham, Brayden Ross and Simmons each had one strikeout while splitting the pitching duties.
Piedmont’s runs came in the bottom of the third and bottom of the fifth innings.
The Cougars rebounded with a 17-7 home win against Brentwood on Tuesday of this week. Piedmont used an 8-run fourth inning to gain control and then closed the door with five more in the sixth.
Simmons was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI with Tyler Griswell finishing 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Statham scored three runs and drove in two. Jamus Wingate had a double and scored two runs.
Adams had five stolen bases with Wingate and Simmons both registering three. Simmons and Taylor both stole two bases.
