Run-off Required for Council; ELOST Passes; Biden, Trump Win
President Joe Biden clinched the Democratic nomination for President after many states primaries yesterday, even though he only received 221 votes in Jasper County. Jasperites did a little more to help Republican Donald Trump clinch his party’s nomination, receiving 952 votes locally.
Voters also approved a one percent education sales tax to continue. It will be used for expansion, as all the local schools are near or past capacity. Some 890 people voted for the sales tax, and 440 voted against it.
There were a total of 1,339 voters out of 11,353 registered voters in the county,. That’s an 11.79 percent turnout.
For the special election to select a City Council person to fill the seat vacated by the death of David Wease, Tim Womack got the most votes with 106, followed by Zachary Middleton who got 82. Melissa Watson Strozier received 69 votes. There will be a run-off on April 9 between the top two vote getters. The voter turnout for that election was a little better, with 265 votes cast out of 1,059 registered voters in the district, for a voter turnout of 25 percent.
