Lady Cougars Earn Win, Will Face Tough Foes

Piedmont Academy’s varsity softball team ventured to Edmund Burke Academy last week and recorded a 12-2 win.
In last Thursday’s victory, the Lady Cougars scored two runs in the top of the first inning and would never trail in the contest. Piedmont added another run in the second with two more in the third, fourth in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Mackenzie Plunkett pitched the first inning before Emily Whitwell worked the last five. Whitwell had three strikeouts and Plunkett had two.
Offensively, Whitwell had a homer, five RBI, two runs scored and three hits in five plate appearances. Marissa Holder, Breck Piedra, Shaniyah Lane and Teagan Hinson each had multiple hits.
Kamie Gibby, Kylee Keck, Memphis Sweat and Kolbee Osborne also contributed offensively.
Whitwell and Lane both had two stolen bases while Gibby, Keck and Piedra had one.
“We are looking good going into the second half of the season,” coach Joe Johnson said. “We have some important region games coming up. We are playing well right now and ready to get back on the field.”
Piedmont (9-4 overall) was scheduled to play at Georgia Military Prep on Wednesday of this week and will travel to Gatewood on Thursday for a 4 p.m. region contest.
The Lady Cougars will face GHSA foes Monroe Area and Morgan County on Saturday in a one-day tournament in Madison. Piedmont is scheduled to play its first game at 11:45.
“Those will be two tough teams,” Johnson said of Saturday’s contests.
