Big Plays Hurt Cougars in Loss

Piedmont Academy football coach Clint Satterfield knew his team needed to not allow big plays against Terrell Academy last Friday.

In the end, the visiting Eagles used three big plays to take a 20-9 win at Cougar Field. Piedmont (1-1) also had to deal with an injury to a key player (Mason Tumlin) which hampered the offensive output.

“I liked the effort,” Satterfield said. “Terrell is a AAA school with a lot of kids. They are a good program. There were some positives from the game.”

Kaden Elkins led the Cougars with 60 yards rushing and a touchdown while Hunter Thomson finished with 21. Piedmont also added a safety from Trenton Jones for its nine points.

Jack Adams caught three passes for 24 yards. Owen Piedra made a 17-yard reception. Keith Hasker and Corbett Crews also had receptions.

Defensively, senior Ridge Stroud made four solo tackles with eight assists. Daniel Joseph finished the game with four solo tackles and four assists. Silan Cowan (four solo, four assists), Braxton Floyd (four solo, one assist), Piedra (two solo, one assist), Hasker (two solo), Michael Burke (one solo, five assists), Crews (two solo) and Wyatt Joyner (five assists) also contributed defensively last week.

On special teams, Landon Cain had a 25-yard return and Thomson had a 24-yard kickoff return. Mark Myles added a PAT.

“We can’t give up big plays on defense,” Satterfield said. “That is how Terrell got their points.”

Piedmont is off this week as it prepares for a Sept. 8 road game against Augusta Prep.

“Offensively, we need all the time we can have,” Satterfield said. “We will keep working. We have five freshmen in the lineup a lot of the time so for us, the more time on the practice field the better. We are also working four new players in. They are all seniors but are new to the team.”
