Lady Cougars Aiming High Again in 2023

Success has been the norm for the Piedmont Academy fast-pitch softball team in recent years.
The Lady Cougars captured another state title in 2022 and will look to keep that streak going during the upcoming 2023 campaign.
Once again, Piedmont will be a favorite to win it all. The Lady Cougars have several quality players return from last year’s championship squad and have also picked up some key new talent.
“We will be in the mix again this year,” coach Joe Johnson said. “Our program remains on track to be successful. We draw kids from surrounding counties. They just want to be a part of a successful program.”
The 2023 schedule is being finalized but Piedmont is set to open the season Thursday, Aug. 3 at George Walton Academy. Johnson said it would be a tough regular season slate for his team including games against larger schools such as GWA, Westfield and Tattnall Square.
“There are a few positions we are trying to get figured out,” Johnson said. “We will need a short stop, catcher and first baseman. We have some talented kids looking to fill those spots. Our good players have gotten even better from last season and we’ve added some to go with them.”
The team was close to perfection a season ago but with so many quality opponents on this year’s schedule, Johnson said it might be tough to match the record. However, once the postseason begins, the coach said he believes Piedmont will be a strong contender to win it all.
The Lady Cougars certainly have some of the top players in GIAA Class AA on their 2023 roster.
“The nucleus is there for a successful season. We are eager to get started.
