Lady Canes Conclude Soccer Season
The 2021-2022 Monticello Lady Canes soccer season came to end at Thomasville High School last Thursday during the first round of state playoffs.
The Lady Canes scored early in the game. Becky Leigh Wilson #3 (assisted by Nat Santoyo #10) was able to break through Thomasville’s defensive line to score the first goal. Thomasville then put in a striker to return a goal.
Wilson then scored another goal, she was assisted by Ashton Whitener #21. Again, Thomasville put in their striker to return the goal.
The Lady Canes were able to hold off Thomasville until the very last second. With 18 seconds left, Thomasville quickly set up for a corner kick. Their player took the shot and their striker hit the ball in to score the winning goal as the buzzer went off.
“The ending of that game was heartbreaking! There was some controversy as the players on the field, as well as the fans, protested the officials not making a call on how the corner kick was not set up on the corner arc,” said Head Coach Angela Savage.
The coach also noted that there may have been some discrepancy with how the final goal was scored but officials would not speak with the coach at the conclusion of the game.
“Although the outcome was not what we wanted, we did meet one of our goals,” said the coach. ”The Lady Canes were able to score more than one goal in a playoff game. In my book, they were the winners of that game. They were ready to go into overtime to get the win and move on to the second round of playoffs.”
Six seniors are leaving this year— Carly Baker, Scout Behling, Aubrey Crowe, Julia Proctor, Kate Robinson, and Ashton Whitener.
Next year, the soccer season looks promising with the new region alignments. Even though the team is losing six seniors, the coach noted that thre are some eighth graders coming up that have experience and can help fill some of the gaps and aid the players returning that are key to the varsity team and the program as a whole.
