Jehan El-Jourbagy Seeks School Post

Jehan El-Jourbagy, a local attorney and professor at Georgia College, is seeking to serve the community as a member of the Jasper County School Board representing District 3.

Jehan grew up in Monticello as a self-described teacher’s kid. Her father, Morad El-Jourbagy, taught high school science and also served as the technology director for the school system.

She went K-12 in Jasper County public schools and graduated in 1996. She went to the University of Georgia for undergraduate studies and law school and began her legal career in Eugene, Oregon.

She married Tyson Harty, a film and engineering teacher at Jasper County High School, in 2002, and they have four children who are enrolled in four local schools: Jasper County Preschool, Jasper County Primary, Washington Park Elementary and Jasper County Middle.

Jehan and her family returned to Monticello in 2005, and they have worked, served, and lived here since that time.

“I am running for school board because I would like to serve my community and help support local children, teachers and staff,” explained Jehan, continuing, “I will always be available to listen to concerns, to listen to praise, and to communicate those observations with our local school system.”

Jehan has spent her life in service to Jasper County. In 2013, she was named Jasper County’s Citizen of the Year by the Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce for her work as the executive director of the Jasper County Mentor Program, matching volunteers with children and organizing educational field trips and programs, and the Monticello Community Band, which she helped found in 2007.

One of the people who nominated her for Citizen of the Year said, “She is committed to her hometown and wants to make her community the best it can be. Her enthusiastic and tireless support of local education, preservation, recreation, agriculture and civics make her an excellent candidate for this award.”

Also in 2007, she completed leadership and community development training with Leadership Jasper and the Georgia Academy of Economic Development and was named Monticello Kiwanian of the Year.

In 2008, she was named Leadership Jasper Outstanding Leader of the Year and was honored with a Jasper County High School Above and Beyond Award for her contributions to academic teams and fundraising for a band grand piano for the high school auditorium. That year, she was also honored by the Georgia Bar Association with the Justice Robert Benham Award for Community Service.

She has also served on the board for Southern Crescent Technical College, the Monticello Downtown Development Authority, and Jasper County’s Zoning Appeals Board.

In 2012, she was recognized by the University of Georgia and named one of 40 Under 40 outstanding alumni who care about their communities and the world around them.

She has served on the School Governance Team at Washington Park Elementary for three years, and she served on the School Governance Team at Jasper County Primary School for three years as well.

“Through my experience with the mentor program, volunteering and serving on SGTs, I’ve really gotten to see first-hand the amazing job our faculty and staff are doing and the resources available to our students,” said Jehan.

“I would really appreciate your support on May 24 or during early voting which is from May 2 to May 20,” said Jehan.
