Qualifying Is Brisk This Week
Qualifying for Jasper County School Board posts has been brisk so far this week, with contested races assured for Districts 1 and 3.
Incumbent School Board member Towonder Dennis has qualified for the District 1 School Board post, and she is being challenged by Cynthia Johns.
District 3 incumbent Dr. Shannon Barton has said she will not seek re-election. Those who have qualified for that seat are Jehan El-Jourbagy and Steven Bubba Wilson, Jr.
In addition, Lewis Rice has qualified to remain District 5 School Board representative.
Qualifying continues through noon Friday in the Jasper County Probate Court in the Courthouse.
Qualifying for Jasper County Commission has not been as brisk, as only one person had qualified as of late Tuesday afternoon.
Commission Chairman Bruce henry, who represents District 2, qualified for re-election. The District 4 seat is also up for election. It is currently occupied by Gerald Stunkel.
State Rep. Susan Holmes has said she will not seek re-election. Because of redistricting, Jasper County will be split between two House districts—114 and 118. Those voters in the Wyatt district will cast votes for District 114, while those who vote in Monticello and Martin and Burney will cast votes for District 118.
Tim Fleming and Wendell McNeal had qualified by Tuesday afternoon for House District 114, according to the Secretary of State website. Clint Crowe of Jackson had qualified for the District 118 seat.
Senate District 25 is currently represented by Sen. Burt Jones. Sen. Jones has said he will seek the Lieutenant Governor post.
Those seeking the post include Leland “Jake” Olinger II, Daniela Sullivan Marzahl, and Ricky “Rick” Williams.
