Diamond Cougars Fall to Gatewood, Trinity

The Piedmont Academy varsity baseball team traveled to Gatewood in Eatonton Friday for what was a rematch of last season’s state championship series.

The host Gators took an 8-2 win despite falling behind early in the game. The Cougars scored two runs in the top of the first but Gatewood answered with three runs in the bottom half and then three more in the second inning.

Additional runs in the fourth and sixth inning sealed the win for the Gators.

Gavin Mask, who has officially committed to play for South Georgia State College, had two hits for Piedmont and Mason Morris drove in a run. Landyn Millard drew two walks.

David Bishop worked 3.1 innings and recorded six strikeouts.

Piedmont fell to Trinity Christian School-Dublin on the road Monday 2-1. Mask worked five strong innings on the mound recording 10 strikeouts.

Morris, Bishop and Brody Anderson each had hits. Chase Taylor, Zach Simmons and Mask each drew walks.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and held the advantage until the bottom of the fifth when the Crusaders scored their two runs. The game was called after the top of the sixth inning due to weather conditions.

The JV Cougars earned a 3-0 win against Trinity on Monday. The Middle School Cougars were tied 1-1 against John Milledge when the game was stopped due to lightning.

The varsity team began Tuesday’s game against Covenant at home but the contest was stopped after 2.5 innings with the Cougars trailing 1-0.

The Diamond Cougars will travel to John Milledge Academy on Thursday before hosting Gatewood in a rematch on Friday. Both games will begin at 4 p.m. Piedmont will then host Trinity Christian School-Dublin on Monday at 4 p.m.
