Piedmont Announces Its STARs

Piedmont Academy has announced its STAR (Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition) student for this year is Audrey Harris Brady.

Miss Brady is the daughter of Traci and Scott Brady of Monticello. She is a lifetime Cougar, having started Piedmont when she was in K-3. Miss Brady, has been a member of the varsity cheerleading squad and the publications staff, where she has served as editor for two years. She is a member of the Monticello Presbyterian Church. Harris plans to attend the University of Georgia in the fall.

Miss Brady chose Ralph Hickman as her STAR teacher.

Each year, every high school selects a STAR student, and that student selects his or her STAR teacher. The STAR student generally has the highest SAT score of the class, and must maintain other qualities as well.

King Smith was announced as Jasper County High School’s STAR student last week, and he chose Dr. Tyson Harty as his STAR teacher.

Miss Brady said of her STAR teacher, Mr. Hickman, “I have chosen Mr. Hickman as my STAR teacher because he has taught me many things throughout high school. I have had Mr. Hickman as my math teacher for the last three years and would not have any other person teaching me high school math.

“Although math is not my favorite subject, Mr. Hickman makes learning math a whole lot easier for me. I appreciate how he keeps everyone on task when learning new information. He is great at explaining things where I can understand them. As I go to college this fall, I am most certainly going to miss Mr. Hickman’s math class.”

Mr. Hickman has been teaching at Piedmont for 18 years. He had this to say about Piedmont’s STAR student:

“I am delighted that Harris Brady is the 2022 STAR Student for Piedmont Academy. Harris possesses many of the traits that characterize students who go on to successful and fulfilling careers. She is a self-motivated, focused student who values the education she receives. She understands that the knowledge she acquires in school will empower her to achieve her goals, both now and in her adult life.

“Harris approaches each day with the expectation that she will accomplish something meaningful. In my three years of working with Harris, she has never wavered in her pursuit of learning and her desire to live up to the standards she has set for herself. Simply put, she does not waste time on her journey toward what will be a future of unlimited possibilities.

“I congratulate Harris on her achievement, and I wish her all the best as she continues her education.”

The STAR students and teachers from Jasper County High School and Piedmont Academy will be honored at a luncheon Friday, Feb. 4, at the Visitors’ Center. At that time the county STARs will be announced.
