Mat Canes Earn Win

Two tough matches ended with a 1-1 record for the Jasper County-Monticello High School wrestling team last week.

The Mat Canes defeated host Washington County 48-36 while dropping a 48-36 decision to Glen Hills.

Brody Rice (106), Trent Durham (113), Lucas Sprayberry (120), Anderson Reid (152), Hayvan Sprayberry (170) and Levi Shaw (heavyweight) were each 2-0 in their matches.

Jasper County-Monticello also traveled to Strong Rock for an individual tournament this past weekend.

Overall, the Mat Canes were seventh. Coach Andy Rewis noted three of the top four teams were Class AAAAAA or higher.

“I thought we improved,” Rewis said. “It was a good tournament to compete in.”

Rice and Durham both finished third in their respective weight classes while Red was fourth at 145. Jacob Mathis also placed fourth at 195.

“We are getting people in right spots which is good before we get to the region duals,” Rewis said.
