Canes Now 1-1 In Region Play Girls Still Searching for Win
With one of its top players battling a foot injury, the Jasper County-Monticello High School varsity boys basketball team didn’t have quite enough offense to overcome visiting Northeast-Macon last Friday.
The Canes dropped a 50-36 decision and are now 1-1 in Region 3-AA play.
“The score doesn’t indicate how close the game was but a loss is still a loss,” coach Chris Pennamon said.
Randy Williams stepped up with a team-high 16 points. Kemarion Thomas finished with five points but aggravated a foot injury.
“He played but he was hobbled throughout the game and was also in foul trouble,” Pennamon said. “Northeast is a well-coached team. We knew it would be tough.”
The coach said Williams is showing steady improvement.
Marlerio Stone added four points.
“Two of our top scorers were not having a good night,” Pennamon said.
Jasper County-Monticello earned a home non-region game against Jackson on Saturday. The Canes held on for a 49-44 victory.
“It was not our greatest game in the world but it was still good to get it,” Pennamon said. We did not want to lose another game with three tough ones coming up.”
Trailing 17-8 after the first quarter, Thomas entered the contest in the second. He would finish with eight points in two quarters of play.
Defensively, Jasper County-Monticello held the Red Devils to one point in the third quarter.
Stone (16 points) and Williams (11 points) both finished in double figures. Jacarion Grier added six points.
The Jasper County-Monticello Lady Canes were 0-6 following losses to Lamar County (74-26) and Northeast Macon (82-16). The Lady Canes are now 0-2 in Region 3-AA.
The Jasper County-Monticello High School teams will play at Ola High School on today beginning at 3:30 p.m.
