Two Mat Canes Earn Second Place

Two Jasper County-Monticello High School wrestlers earned second place finishes at the Briarpatch Scramble hosted by Putnam County High School last week.

Val Davis and Owen Diaz both earned second-place in separate heavyweight divisions.

“Some of our younger wrestlers also showed improvement,” coach Andy Rewis said.

Sammy Ivey (152), Tyler McCray (182) and Jacob Mathis (195) each had strong showings in Eatonton. Anderson Reid (152) also went 2-1.

“Overall, we wrestled better than our previous outing,” Rewis said. “We have really tried to concentrate on the fundamentals in the past week.”

The Mat Canes were scheduled to host a quad-meet this past weekend but Rewis said teams had to pull out of the event.

“We hated we weren’t able to wrestle,” Rewis said. “We have so many ninth graders and sophomores that we need to wrestle to gain experience.”
