Mat Canes Win Battle of Jackson Lake
The Jasper County-Monticello High School wrestling team continues to be the champion of Jackson Lake.
The Mat Canes defeated Jackson High School 60-12 on November 16 in the annual Battle of Jackson Lake. It was the fourth consecutive year Jasper County-Monticello has earned the title.
Mat Canes Brody Rice (106), Trent Durham (113), Travis Teron (120), Gabe Evans (126), Ivan Vargas (138), Nathan Alexander (145), Anderson Reid (160), Hayden Sprayberry (182), Jacob Mathis (195) and Val Davis (285) all earned victories.
It was also a special night for Mat Canes coach Andy Rewis who earned his 500th career victory. It was the 350th victory for Rewis as coach of Jasper County-Monticello.
“It was a good day,” the coach said. “I tell people I am just old so that is why I have been able to have that many wins.”
Rewis started the Mat Canes program several years ago.
The Jasper County-Monticello wrestlers also competed in the Greyhound Duals hosted by Jones County High School last weekend.
The competition was tough and the Mat Canes were 0-4 with losses to Jones County, Houston County, Dublin and Mount de Sales.
“I felt like our youth and inexperience played a role,” Rewis said. “We gave good effort but had to face some stronger competition.”
Jasper County-Monticello will host a quad meet on Saturday with Dublin, Baldwin and Piedmont Academy also competing. Rewis noted it will be the first time the Mat Canes will face the Mat Cougars.
