John Augustus ‘Sonny’ Lane
John Augustus “Sonny” Lane, 90, passed away peacefully October 19, 2021.
A celebration of his life will be held at Highland Hills Baptist Church on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2021; at 2 p.m. Dr. Scott Nash will officiate. Family will greet friends following the church service in the Great Room.
John was born in Monticello on January 12, 1931, the son of the late Elizabeth Persons Lane Ballard and Augustus Horton Lane. He was married to Harriette Edith “Sunny” Banks Lane for 49 years until her death in 1999. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Persons Lane.
John was a graduate of Monticello High School. He attended Emory at Oxford and graduated from Mercer University with an economics degree. While at Mercer he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Glee Club, and Mercer Choir and played intramural basketball. Upon graduating from Mercer he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve where he served for six years.
John was a member of Highland Hills Baptist Church for 63 years where he served as a deacon, treasurer and numerous other committees. He sang in the choir for over 50 years.
He was a Boy Scout leader, sang in the Macon Civic Chorale and part of the Big Brother’s Association.
John started his career with Stuart Pharmaceutical for many years before retiring from Service News of Macon.
John’s love for music was evident. He loved playing the piano, guitar and banjo. His family was his pride and joy. He loved traveling with his wife and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his son, John Hunt Lane (Debbie), daughter, Cyndie Lane Vance (Bryan) and daughter Eydie Lane Bowden (Bill); grandchildren, Chris Vance (Emily), Beth Vance Richardson (Nick), Brandon Lane (Kaycee), John Vance (Amy), Megan Lane Valentini (Ryan), Will Bowden (Taylor), Lane Bowden, Harriette Ann Bowden and Jimmy Bowden and 12 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Mary Louise “Ludy” Peavy of Byron.
