Lady Cougars Earn Region Wins

A six-run second inning helped give the Piedmont Academy fast-pitch softball team a 9-0 home win against Gatewood last Thursday.

The Lady Cougars had 11 hits in the contest and limited the Lady Gators to just two. Piedmont also played error-free softball in the field in winning its region opener.

Kylee Keck had three hits in the win while Teagan Satterfield and Fleming Sealy both had two. Keck, Maddie Waddleton and Teagan Hinson each had two RBI. McKayla Arnold drew a walk.

“We are looking good right now,” said coach Joe Johnson. “It’s always good to beat one of your rivals.”

After the strong second inning, the Lady Cougars added a run in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth inning to earn the victory in five innings.

Emily McEwen earned the win in the pitcher’s circle going all five innings and recording a strikeout.

“We just find a way to win,” Johnson said. “These kids have a lot of heart and they work hard. We have to keep grinding. We are in the region schedule now so we have to still put the necessary amount of work in and stay focused.”

Piedmont defeated Windsor Academy 5-0 in a home game Tuesday. Averi Camp went the distance striking out six batters to record the win.

McEwen, Waddleton and Abby Arnold each had two hits. Arnold and Hinson both drew two walks. Marissa Holder, Sealy and Keck drove in runs.

The game was close, especially early in the contest. The Lady Cougars led 1-0 after two innings before adding a run in both the third and fourth innings. Piedmont sealed the win with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Piedmont (9-3 overall, 2-0 in region) is scheduled to travel to LaGrange Academy today, Sept. 16 for a 5 p.m. region contest.
