Trio Leads Hurricanes at Cross Country Meet

The Jasper County-Monticello High School cross country teams benefited from standout individual performances to start the 2021 season.

The Canes and Lady Canes both competed at the 2021 Class of the Clashes in Cochran Saturday. The event was divided into grade classifications.

Kemarion Thomas won the 3,200-meter run in the sophomore classification for the Jasper County-Monticello boys in 12:24.94. It was an impressive start for Thomas who was competing in his initial cross country event.

For the Lady Canes, juniors Brianna Dalton and JaKara Tobler finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 3,200-meter run. Dalton recorded a time of 15:06.78 while Tobler completed the race in 15:13.75

Brooklyn Dalton was 11th in the event (16:55.58) and Marlene Torres earned 20th (20:52.72).

In the junior event for the boys, Paul Zimmerman was 12th in 13:33.50. Geralynn Benton was 26th in 18:03.78.

Coaches said all team members competed well in the first competition of the 2021 season.

The Jasper County Middle School teams competed at the Mary Persons Distance Classic in Forsyth. In the 3,000-meter event, Powell Goolsby was fourth for the JCMS boys in 12:48.28.

Evan Diaz was 18th in 14:16.12 and Christopher Boswell was 24th finishing the race in 14:33.23. Overall, the JCMS boys were fifth.

Colbie Ramsey was ninth for the Middle School Lady Canes in the 3,000-meter run in 15:36.20 and Taryn McCart was 25th with a time of 18:18.29.
