4th of July Fun

With Independence Day falling on Sunday this year, many locales celebrated on Saturday. That was the case in Shady Dale, where they had old-timey fun and games with a watermelon eating contest, sack races and more. Sarah Skinner (left) watched Nolan and Hemingway House, and Ally Manzanarez eat watermelon, while Elijah House watched. At dark, there was a fireworks show. The photo at right depicts patriotic vendors at Saturday’s Market on the Square. In addition, the American Legion put out crosses of veterans and put flags on veterans’ graves. Monticello First United Methodist Church lined its driveway with flags. The holiday culminated with a day off for many professionals on Monday as government offices, banks, and others were closed in observance of the holiday.
