Julia Mae Bullard Jacobs Baskins
Funeral services for Julia Mae Bullard Jacobs Baskins will be held Friday, June 11 beginning at noon at Anointed Body of Christ Church in Porterdale, Ga. with burial to follow at Brown Chapel Cemetery in Eatonton. Rev. Bobby Sims, Sr. will officiate.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Julia went to be with the Lord on June 6, 2021, following a brief illness. She was born May 18, 1942, in Cochran, Ga., to the late Sidney Bullard and Nancy Clemons Bullard.
Julia, affectionately called “Sister” by her family in honor of her late aunt, loved life, laughed often and smiled always. She was not shy about striking up a conversation and used her wit and humor to keep people off balance. She was given the nickname “Jalapeno” because of her engaging manner and spice for life. Although she was small in stature at under five feet, her personality was larger than life.
She was raised and educated in Eatonton, and graduated from Butler Baker High School.
Julia was married to the late Emory Jacobs for 45 years, and to this union five children were born. She married Deacon Willie Baskins on November 24, 2013.
Julia accepted Christ as her savior at an early age. She grew up attending Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church in Eatonton and was a member of Mount Zion A.M.E. Church in Shady Dale for many years, where she supervised the Youth Department for many years. She later joined Anointed Body of Christ in Porterdale.
Julia was employed by the Jasper County School System in Monticello, and had a passion for working with children with disabilities, helping them make meaningful accomplishments with a patient and kind manner that encouraged them to keep trying. She also worked at Monticello Manufacturing Company.
She urged her own children and grandchildren to think big and set goals, continue their education and to not be daunted by setbacks or those who may try to stand in their way. She was a role model for strong women.
She joined Morris Brown No. 130 Order of the Eastern Star in Mansfield, Ga., in October 1980. She was an active member for 41 years, where she served her chapter and community with a cheerful heart. She served in many roles including Worthy Matron.
She enjoyed traveling which took her to places including Scotland, Italy, New York’s financial district and many other places. Julia sang soprano with her sisters in a gospel group, the Bullard Sisters, for more than 40 years. She also assisted her younger sister, Ruth, in catering weddings.
Her other loves included seafood, planting flowers, and making big dinners for her family which often included tasty turnip greens.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Willie Mae Johnson, Georgia Bell Knox, Eleanor Bullard, and Nancy Jones; and five brothers, Sidney Jr., Theo, Leroy, Robert, and Paul Bullard.
Julia will be forever loved by her husband, Willie Baskins of Covington; a son, Quentin Jacobs (Clarice) of Monticello; four daughters, Nesa Andrews of Covington, Karen Hicks (Ronnie) of Ellenwood, Susan Jacobs and Bionca Sims (Lanier) of Covington; sisters, Catherine Brooks of Decatur and Flossie Hamm of Eatonton; grandchildren, Damien Gotel (Shari); Jawann Andrews (Shana); Sade and Jasmine Andrews; Corvette and Corey Harrison; LaThaydra Sands (Amante); Robyn and Jacob Asbell; and Preston and Chase Sims; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Special Olympics.
