Middle School Cougars Win Two at Tournament
The Piedmont Academy Middle School baseball team competed four times last Saturday during the End of Season tournament in Dublin.
The Cougars went 2-2 overall during the marathon day with wins against Gatewood and in a rematch with Thomas Jefferson. Piedmont also lost a close contest with Robert Toombs and in its first game of the day against Thomas Jefferson.
Saturday’s tournament started off slow for the MS Cougars as they fell 14-0 to Thomas Jefferson. The Jaguars took an early 4-0 lead and then added nine more runs in the top of the second.
Evan Jefferies and Alex Statham both had two strikeouts while on the pitcher’s mound.
Piedmont then rebounded to defeat Gatewood 4-2. The Cougars scored three runs in the top of the second inning and added one more in the fourth. The Gators scored runs in both the second and third innings.
Sawyer Freeman and Gavin McCart both had two hits while Jaxson Cochran had one. Cochran drove in two runs while Freeman and Statham both had an RBI. Jayce Daniel drew a walk.
Freeman worked three innings and had six strikeouts. Jamus Wingate worked an inning and had one strikeout.
Piedmont then earned some payback against Thomas Jefferson taking a 7-0 win. McCart had three hits and drove in three runs to help lead the offense.
Tyler Griswell and Coby Cook both had hits. Griswell and Justin Crowder both drove in runs.
McCart earned the win throwing a no-hitter and striking out seven batters.
In the final day of the game, the MS Cougars fell 2-1 to Robert Toombs. Piedmont took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Crusaders pushed runs across in the second and third innings.
Trenton Jones had a hit for the Cougars and Statham drew a walk.
Jamus Wingate worked three innings and struck out three batters while Statham had two strikeouts.
