Diamond Canes Fall in Two 3AA Region Games

It was a tough two-game stretch in region play for the Jasper County-Monticello High School varsity baseball team.

The Canes fell to Dodge County 8-4 on the road Tuesday. Baylor Edge did an outstanding job on the pitcher’s mound, coach Brady McMichael said.

“We had one bad inning in which Dodge County scored five runs,” the coach said. “We managed to get four runs in the top of the seventh but it was too late.”

The Diamond Canes also fell to Bleckley County 8-1 in region action last Friday on the road.

Gramae Williams had two hits and Mac Barton added one to help lead the offense. Tristan Humphries drove in the team’s lone run.

Cole Hays went five innings with six strikeouts before Myles Proctor pitched one inning.

Bleckley County scored two runs in the third before adding three in both the fifth and sixth innings.

We were down by a run in the bottom of the fifth and then we stopped making plays,” McMichael said. “Cole pitched well enough to keep us in the game but it is hard to beat a good team when you make five errors.”

Jasper County-Monticello actually held a 1-0 lead after the top of the third. The two-game stretch saw the team commit a total of 10 errors.

“Pitching and defense will keep you in a lot of games,” McMichael said. “But when you make that many errors it really hampers your pitchers. If we want to make the playoffs we have to get better defensively and have a complete change on offense. “

The Canes will host Dodge in a rematch on Friday.
