Tristan Light Medals at State for Mat Canes

Senior Tristan Light tied for fifth place at the GHSA Class AA state wrestling meet last week in Macon.

Light (220) was the lone member of the Jasper County-Monticello High School wrestling team to finish in the top six of his respective weight class.

“He wrestled well and got off to a strong start,” said coach Andy Rewis. “He was focused and had been on this big stage before. The further you go at state then the competition really gets tough.”

While the Mat Canes had 12 wrestlers at the state finals, for some it was the first time at that level.

“When you are used to wrestling in high school gyms it can be an adjustment at the state level, Rewis said. “Hopefully this experience will be beneficial for our wrestlers. We really had a young team this season. I think this season will help the program down the road.”

Trent Durham (106), Gabe Evans (112), Jackson White (120), Nathan Picklesimer (126), Will Garvin (145), Anderson Reed (152), Dylan Franklin (160), Ethan Shapiro (170) and Sabreon McGuire (182), Darquan Norwood (195) and Levi Shaw (heavyweight) also represented the Mat Canes at state.
