Cougars Set for Region Tournament

One mission has been accomplished for the Piedmont Academy varsity boys basketball team.

The Cougars capped a perfect regular season mark with a 68-46 road win against Windsor Academy last Friday. Piedmont finishes the regular season 15-7 overall and 8-0 in GISA Region 1-AA.

Coach Will Johnson’s team received a bye in the opening round of the tournament as the number one seed and will play in the semifinals on Friday at home at 6:30 p.m.

“We had a good week to close out the regular season,” Johnson said. “We defeated Augusta Prep and Windsor and were up by 30 in both games at one point. I think we may be peaking at the right time which is huge going into the region tournament. We are not looking ahead. We have to handle the region tournament first. We want to win it and secure our ranking for the state tournament.”

Currently, the Cougars are ranked third in AA. Johnson said a region tournament championship might move the team up to second.

“We just have to play and see how everything works out,” he said. “We have to handle our business.”

The top eight teams will host a first-round state tournament contest. The second round of state will be at Tattnall Square Academy in Macon with the Final Four at Georgia Southwestern University.
