Mat Canes Fall At Duals

The Jasper County-Monticello High School wrestling team had a tough opening-round draw on Saturday and as a result was quickly eliminated from the preliminary state wrestling duals.

The Mat Canes fell to East Laurens 54-24 in first-round competition hosted by Cook County High School.

“We drove about three hours, wrestling for an hour and then drove back three hours,” coach Andy Rewis said. “They were simply better than us. I don’t think the long trip did us any favors as we got off the bus and wrestled soon after. The experience they had showed and it took advantage of our inexperience in spots.”

Gabe Evans (113), Jackson White (120), Nathan Picklesimer (126), Sabreon McGuire (182) and Tristan Light (220) each earned wins for Jasper County-Monticello.

“The experience we gained will help us down the road,” Rewis said.

“Sometimes when your best wrestlers match up with another team’s best wrestlers then things don’t work out for you. Plus, I don’t think we were mentally ready. I can’t take away from East Laurens though. They won the match.”

The Mat Canes were scheduled to host Upson-Lee High School and Alcovy High School on Wednesday for Senior Night.

The team is off this weekend since it did not qualify for the finals of the state duals.
