Mat Canes Earn Three Victories, Preparing for 3AA Region Duals
The Jasper County-Monticello High School varsity wrestling team was finally able to return to the mat last Friday and in doing so recorded three impressive victories.
The Mat Canes, coached by Andy Rewis, defeated Baldwin 60-9, Northeast-Macon 57-12 and Strong Rock Christian School 53-18 in home matches. It was the first competition for Jasper County-Monticello in two weeks.
Nathan Picklesimer (126), Anderson Reed (152), Dylan Franklin (160), Ethan Shapiro (170), Sabreon McGuire (182), Darquan Norwood (195) and Tristan Light (222) each went 3-0 in their respective matches.
“I also thought our younger wrestlers showed a good deal of improvement,” Rewis said.
Trent Durham (16), Will Garvin (145) and Shapiro (170) are young team members who drew the praise of their coach.
“With us being out from competition for so long, I thought we wrestled very well,” Rewis said. “We need to see competition to get back on track.”
The Mat Canes are now working for the Saturday’s, Jan. 16 region duals which will be hosted by Lamar County High School. Rewis said Lamar County, while new to the region, has a strong team and is considered one of the favorites to win.
The Jasper County-Monticello coach said Putnam County, as well as the Mat Canes, should be in contention as well.
