Piedmont’s Cameron Mobley Signs With University of North Georgia
Piedmont Academy’s Cameron Mobley has played a big role in the recent success of the Diamond Cougar baseball program.
Now the senior has his athletic and academic careers mapped out following his high school education. Mobley officially signed to play baseball for the University of North Georgia during a ceremony held at Piedmont Academy last week.
“I felt it was the best fit for me,” Mobley said. “It’s not too far from home plus it is a very competitive program. I believe I can go in and make an impact.”
With the senior season of high school play on the horizon, Mobley said he is eager to do whatever it takes to help the Diamond Cougars win whether it is pitching, playing in the field or delivering at the plate.
“Ultimately, we want to win another championship,” he said. “It was disappointing losing most of last season but we hope to make up for it this time.”
Mobley was joined by family members, teammates and classmates during his signing. He has been one of the top pitchers for Piedmont being called upon in many key games. Mobley will get the chance to pitch at North Georgia as well.
“Cameron has always worked had to make this dream of his come true,” said Piedmont baseball coach Matt Britt. “He is always working in the weight room and doing everything he can to get better. Even in the offseason Cameron is always working.”
Mobley and his teammates had the 2020 season cut short due to the COVID-19 health crisis but even in the few games the Cougars played the senior was impressive on the diamond.
“He was set for a breakout junior season,” Britt said. “We started as pitcher in two of the game we did play and he excelled in both. Cameron is also a very good player in other aspects of the sport.”
The Piedmont coach said he believes North Georgia is a good fit for Mobley.
“They aren’t signing many players due to everything going on so it says a lot that they wanted him,” Britt said. “Their coach told he that Cameron was one of the top players they wanted. In athletics it’s good to go where you are wanted. Their facilities are comparable to many smaller Division I programs.”
The North Georgia Nighthawks are coached by Tom Cantrell and compete in the Peach Belt Conference. Cantrell has coached the program for more than two decades.
Cameron’s father, Chad, said the entire family is excited about this opportunity and were impressed with the school and its baseball facilities.
