Sheriff’s Office Checks On Sex Offenders, Issues One Warrant

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office participated in Operation Watchful Eye V, the Statewide Residence and Compliance Check of Registered Sex Offenders coordinated by the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association and the GSA Sex Offender Registry Task Force.

The date of the operation was scheduled for October 26 – November 29, 2020. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office worked diligently and was able to complete the assignment on November 15.

During this month-long operation, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office conducted residence verifications in an effort to track the movements of offenders and enforce registration requirements.

The Sheriff’s Office conducted 60 attempted verifications and during those checks, deputies traveled to each residence and contacted the offender or a family member to check their registration status and make sure that they are still living at that address.

The deputy also made certain that no changes to the offender’s phone number or the vehicle they drive has changed. If any changes have been made, the deputy will document that and all information is uploaded to the Sheriff’s Office website as well as the GBI website so that our sex offender registry is current.

One warrant was issued for an offender who moved without notifying the Sheriff’s Office within 72 hours of moving.

Jasper County has 42 registered sex offenders living in the county. Four of those offenders are considered sexual predators and have more stringent registration processes.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office will continue to maintain the sex offender registry and monitor sex offenders in order to protect the citizens of Jasper County, said Sheriff Donnie Pope.
