The Shoppes of Monticello Plan for Upcoming Grand Opening, Ribbon Cutting

Painted furniture, painted glassware, embroidery, luggage and purses, rocks and minerals, candles, Avon, antique furniture, children’s and adult clothing, M-5 Angus, floral works, jewelry, woodworking and more will be offered at the Shoppes of Monticello which is scheduled to open this week, according to discussion at the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) meeting on October 28.

The DDA met to discuss the progress at 139 West Washington Street, and opening plans, and review the budget. The DDA budgeted some $31,000 for renovations to the building to prepare it for the Shoppes. As of Wednesday, they had spent $21,500, which included the electrical, plumbing and shelving. The members said they should come in under budget.

A grand opening is planned for this Saturday, Nov. 7. In addition, a ribbon cutting will be held next Thursday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. The DDA plans to conduct a raffle in conjunction with the grand opening. Tickets will be sold for a Galaxy Tab A, as well as other items such as a purse, jewelry, and gourmet food baskets.

The DDA also discussed plans for Shop Small Saturday on November 28, and agreed to bring in a tap truck that will offer beer, wine, and spiked and regular cider. The truck requires $500 purchase. They discussed having it for both Saturday and Sunday, and agreed to limit it to Saturday only. The Monticello City Council would have to approve the event, so it won’t be finalized until after that meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 10.

During the weekend, artists will be doing demonstrations around the Square. The DDA talked about getting a food truck for Sunday or cooking hamburgers and hot dogs, but no decision was made.

DDA members voted to repair/replace broken glass in the windows at 139 West Washington Street, and voted to take that money out of the DDA general budget, not the Shoppes budget.

Effective this month, Wendell Yoder will serve as chair of the DDA, and he will step down as treasurer after the DDA gets its Quickbooks up and running. Judy Hunsucker will serve as vice-chair.
