Lady Cougars Win Final Three Region Games

The Piedmont Academy varsity softball posted a 15-4 victory against LaGrange Academy last Thursday during Senior Night.

It was also another region victory for the Lady Cougars who are now preparing for the postseason. Piedmont scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning but the visiting Lady Warriors answered with four of their own in the top of the second.

The Lady Cougars scored four more in the bottom of the second and three runs in the bottom of the third. Four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning sealed the win for Piedmont.

Seniors recognized for the 2020 Lady Cougars included Haley Ann Frank, Ava Anglin, Melanie Karoffa and Jayden Young.

Frank (three hits) and Marissa Holder (two hits) helped lead the offense while Fleming Sealy had a homer. Emily McEwen had four RBI while McKayla Arnold and Sealy both drove in two runs.

Holder and Young both drew walks.

In the pitcher’s circle, Averi Camp worked five innings and recorded five strikeouts.

In Monday’s rematch between the teams in LaGrange, the Lady Cougars were victorious with a 14-2 win. After scoring runs in both the first and second innings, Piedmont put the game out of reach with 10 more runs in the top of the third.

Maddie Waddleton had three hits while Frank and McEwen both had two. Waddleton and Sealy both drove in two runs while Young had one RBI.

Holder and Abby Arnold both drew walks in Monday’s rematch.

McEwen earned the win and recorded two strikeouts.

The Lady Cougars wrapped up the regular season with a 9-0 road win against region foe Gatewood. After two scoreless innings Piedmont pushed six runs across in the top of the third inning before adding two more in the fourth and one final run in the top of the fifth.

In a game where both teams struggled offensively, the Lady Cougars benefited from four errors by the Lady Gators.

Frank, McEwen and Sealy helped lead the offense. Marissa Holder drove in two runs while Waddleton and Sealy both had an RBI.

Camp earned the win while Abby Arnold pitched well in relief. Camp had three strikeouts while Arnold recorded two.

Piedmont (10-3-1 overall) is set to begin postseason play this weekend.
