Cougar Game Postponed, On Road Friday
Piedmont Academy’s scheduled varsity football game last Friday never kicked off.
On Thursday the school was informed that a player for Rock Springs Christian Academy had tested positive for COVID-19 so the game was not played. Cougar coach Will Johnson said the schools are trying to re-schedule the contest for later in the 2020 season.
In some ways the postponement of the road game was a blessing for Piedmont. It gave various players a chance to recover from injuries and it also allowed the Cougars two extra practice sessions for Memorial Day, this Friday’s opponent.
Piedmont will make the trek to Savannah for the contest leaving Friday morning on a chartered bus.
“Memorial is very athletic,” Johnson said. “They will be the most talented team we have played. They have a lot of speed on the outside. On defense they have a very strong outside linebacker. It should be a very good contest.”
With both schools competing in the Class A playoff bracket this contest will be a key one in terms of postseason seeding.
“We have to really be focused for this game,” Johnson said. “That’s why it was important we had some extra practices last week once we realized our game was postponed.”
Memorial Day enters the game 1-0 while Piedmont is 2-0. Johnson said he hopes the fact his team has played an extra game as well as a preseason scrimmage will prove to be an advantage.
“It will really come down to who is more focused and prepared,” the coach said. “We can’t let little things cost us. The game is going to be evenly matched so even small mistakes can get you beat.”
Memorial Day defeated Griffin Christian in its lone contest this season back on September 11. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
Following this week’s long road trip, Piedmont will play at home on Friday, Oct. 2 against Robert Toombs.
