Middle School Lady Cougars Earn More Wins
A four-run third inning helped lift the Piedmont Academy Middle School softball team to a 5-4 win against visiting Gatewood last week.
The Lady Cougars also scored a run in the bottom of the third inning. Gatewood scored three runs in the top of the fifth and added one more in the top of the sixth inning.
Emily Whitwell led Piedmont with two hits while also pitching five innings for the Lady Cougars. Whitwell had eight strikeouts in the contest.
Kayle McCart pitched one inning and had one strikeout.
Earlier in the week the Middle School Lady Cougars fell 11-8 to Jasper County Middle School on the road. Piedmont led 3-0 after the top of the third inning before the host Lady Canes put their first run on the board in bottom of the third.
The Lady Cougars then scored four runs in the top of the fourth before Jasper County answered with a big seven-run bottom half of the inning. Piedmont added one more in the top of the fifth and the Lady Canes pushed three runs across in the bottom of the sixth.
While the Lady Cougars had 13 hits in the contest as compared to seven for Jasper County, Piedmont was hurt with eight errors. Carlie Wilbanks had four hits while Whitwell had three and Kylie Keck connected for two. Whitwell also had an RBI.
Sarah Ellen Stroud and Carly Meredith both drew two walks. Whitwell had 12 strikeouts for Piedmont while Kylee Schell was also effective in the pitcher’s circle for Jasper County with 11 strikeouts.
The two local teams met again on Monday of this week as the Lady Cougars won this time 8-0 at home. Piedmont jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the third inning and had nine hits in the contest.
Wilbanks had three hits in the contest while Whitwell had two. Kaylee Gentes drove in two runs while Whitwell and Abbey Phillips both had an RBI. Keck drew two walks while Abby Moore had one.
Whitwell earned the win working five innings with 11 strikeouts.
The Middle School Lady Cougars will travel to Bethlehem Christian Academy on Saturday for an 11 a.m. contest.
