Martha Anne Preston Behling

It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of Martha Anne Preston Behling.

Anne was born on September 4, 1943 to Banks and Mary Preston of Shady Dale. Anne Grew up in Shady Dale and spent her childhood and early school days there. Anne graduated from Jasper County High School in 1961. She then attended Tift College in Forsyth to pursue a career in teaching.

She graduated in 1965 and began teaching for the Jasper County School System. Anne taught for 30 years for Jasper County and raised her two children, Banks and Leigh here.

She retired from teaching in 1994 and began working as assistant magistrate for numerous years and enjoyed a new venture.

Anne was a loving mother to William Banks Behling and Leigh Anne Behling. She was blessed with a loving son-in-law, Wayne Rye, and daughter-in-law Mandie Waits Behling. They blessed her with four grandchildren that she adored, Sawyer Preston Behling, Justin Wayne Rye, Scout Rebecca Behling, and Mary Ashleigh Rye.

Anne was given the name Bama from her grandchildren, which became her knickname. Anne was a loving aunt to Amy and Darrel Baxter, Mike Preston, Scott and Ashley Preston and a great-aunt to Daniel and James Baxter.

Anne was a member of Monticello Baptist Church and enjoyed many friends there.

Anne’s favorite hobbies were playing bridge with her loving friends, singing and piano playing. She loved animals and she leaves behind her beloved dog, Brin, and many valuable friends and loved ones.

Anne passed away on August 4, 2020. She is now at rest peacefully after a short battle with cancer. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 10, at 11 a.m. at Monticello Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church before the service.
