David Tinsley, Sr.

David Tinsley, Sr., famous restaurant owner of Dave’s BBQ for 27 years, self-employed carpenter for 15 years, fisherman and lifelong resident of Monticello died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 12 at the age of 70.

A celebration of life graveside service was held Saturday, July 18, at Community Cemetery, 4981 Hwy. 11 South, in Hillsboro.

Mr. Tinsley was born in Monticello no March 15, 1950, to the late Charlie Tinsley, Sr. and Jessie Mae Tinsley. He graduated from Washington Park high School in 1969. He was an outstanding football and basketball player in school.

After he graduated from Washington Park high School, he worked at Frito Lay in Atlanta. On September 27, 1975, he married Linda, a seamstress and his high school sweetheart. In that union, they welcomed two beautiful daughters and a handsome son, who were the most important part of his life.

After the death of Linda’s mother, the late Lucinda Whidby, David and Linda nurtured her two brothers and sister, Thomas, Timothy and Annie. Being the kindhearted man that he was, he loved them as his own.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Mae Tinsley and Charlie Tinsley, Sr., his sister, Alberta Kelly, and a daughter, Shondra Hunter.

Mr. Tinsley was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend, and entrepreneur. He enjoyed fishing, construction, carpentry, gardening, sports, cooking, and card games. He loved spoiling and mentoring his grandkids. He was a spiritual man, loved God, helping people and helping with church activities.

He had a beautiful and loving spirit. He was strong willed, but yet very quiet and reserved until he got to know you. After he warmed up to you, he would share many great stories and laughs. He was also a problem-solver who often took on difficult and unwanted projects with his friends and family. He always had some advice to share with you when you asked him for help. He was a very wise man. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all that knew him.

David is survived by his children, Telsa Tinsley, Trameka (Raymone) Whitening, David Tinsley, Jr., Alvin (Shakela) Tinsley, Donnell Mitchell, Quentin Mitchell and Andre Mitchell; his brothers and sisters, Charlie Tinsley, Jr., Ruthie Richards, Marshall Tinsley, Willie Tinsley, and Martha White; his grandsons, Quantavious Hunter, Alvontae Tinsley, Alliance Tinsley, and Alvin Tinsley, Jr.; granddaughters, Mekia Taylor, Alexis Tinsley, Alona Jackson, Aliyah Hayes, Brionna Martin, Janiyah Mitchell; his great-grandchildren, Jassiah Hatcher and Genesis Okushi, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, along with a Godbrother, Tony (Marsha) Phillips.
