Move Quickly To Appeal Assessment
Recently, you received the 2020 tax assessment on your home, land, and accessory buildings, sent out by the Jasper County Board of Assessors. You have a very limited amount of time to appeal this assessment. Deadline is May 29, so time is of the essence.
The estimated taxes listed at the bottom of your assessment notice is just that, an estimate. The Board of Commissioners and the Board of Education have yet to vote on the budget or millage rate to be used for 2020 property taxes.
First, call Jasper County Tax Assessor, Lynn Bentley, at 706-468-4904. She would like to talk to citizens to advise and help them. Hours and days of operation are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If you still want to file an appeal, here is the process:
1. Obtain a form PT-311 Appeal of Assessment which can easily be found on the internet at Georgia Department of Revenue, search box type “PT-311”. You can click on the form and print it, make at least two copies. You can fax, mail or hand deliver to the courthouse. Currently the courthouse is not open to the public, so you will have to call the office so they can meet you outside.
2. The top of form asks for your name, address, city, state, zip code, home phone number, cell phone number and email address.
3. The next section asks what kind of assessment are you appealing. If you are appealing, the assessment on your residence or land, check the box to the side of “Real.” Currently, only real property assessments have been sent out.
4. Then from the letter you received from the Board of Assessors, you can find the information needed for the next section, property ID number, property description, and account number.
5. Next section asks you to specify grounds for appeal. Most will be filed for value, taxability and uniformity, check all that apply. Also in this section, you have to choose who you want to hear your appeal. To get a free appeal, check box 1 and 3, boxes 2 and 4 have a fee. Also in this section, you will add the amount that you believe is a fair value for your property.
6. Property Owners Comments—In the box state your case of why you feel the value of your property is unfair, give reasons such as: does not comply with local sales equal to your homes location, condition, square footage, extra features (garage, basement, docks, out buildings, driveway, improvements).
7. Signature, address and date.
Mail or hand deliver to the office – Jasper County Board of Assessors, 126 West Greene Street, Suite 124, Monticello, Ga. 31064.
