Grey Canes Fall to Putnam White in Final

Jasper County 7/8 Grey Canes competed against Putnam County 7/8 White for the 2019 Lake Area Football Championship last Saturday.

The Grey Canes fought hard against Putnam White, but came up short with a final score of 25-14. The Grey Canes finished their season with a 7-1 record.

After the game, the players, coaches, and cheerleaders were announced and awarded trophies. It was a very proud moment. As the recreation director, Roger Minter, said, “I’ve been with the recreation department for seven years, and in seven years I’ve never seen a 7/8 team go to the championship.”

Following the trophies, the coaches took a turn in speaking, and every one of them spoke to the same thing— Monticello pride. They were all proud to coach in Monticello, and they were honored to coach the 7/8 children emphasizing their belief that the 7/8 recreation group are well beyond their years. All of the coaches are amazed by each players progress and dedication.

They all truly believe in the program offered by the Jasper County Recreation Department. Starting children out in recreation at a young age will develop them as they transition to eventually play high school sports together. They believe that all of the 7/8 group will put Monticello on top in recreation and eventually as a Hurricane.

2019 was a successful year for 7/8 baseball and football. The 2019 All-Stars baseball team placed fifth in the state for the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association and proudly claimed the 2019 Lake Area Football League Runner up. Now is the time to start your child in recreation sports.

“Help all of the parents, coaches, and recreation staff continue to build a program for our youth that aids their athletic development, builds a foundation for discipline on and off the field, and grows friendships that will last a lifetime,” said proud parent Brittany Haizlip.
