Elijah ‘Buddy’ Banks

A homegoing service for Elijah “Buddy” Banks who died November 5, 2019, was held Saturday, Nov. 9, at Freedonia A.M.E. Church in Monticello. Rev. Herman Dennis, pastor, was eulogist.

Mr. Banks, known by most as “Buddy” was born to the parentage of the late Henry Banks and Eliza Mae Barron. He retired form the city of Monticello after 30 years of employment. He also worked at Georgia-Pacific.

Buddy gave all his children and grandchildren nicknames. He was known for having a line of cars behind him while driving 15 miles per hour in his psychedelic truck filled with junk; and, pulling up to the gas tank for 50 cents worth of gas.

Elijah was preceded in death by his wife, Julie Mae Banks; five children, Eddie Ward, Raefel Ward, Larry Banks, Scottie Banks, and Danny Banks. Also, one grandchild, Ricky L. Sands.

Buddy leaves to cherish his memories, five children, Sylvie Wissinger of Covington; Judy Johnson (Wayne) of Juliette, David Banks (Wendy), James Banks, both of Monticello, and Michael (Flortacia) Banks of Covington; nine grandchildren, Wayne Johnson of Virginia Beach, Va., Alan Johnson and Dana Johnson, both of Macon; Kemetria Banks of Covington; Ardracus Banks of Monticello; Sha’Quayla Smith (DeAngelo) of Augusta, Kerry T. Sands of Monticello; Shannon N. Banks of Americus, and Anthony Johnson of Conyers; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a sister, Emmie Johnson of Monticello; two nieces, Ruby J. Carter and Brenda Johnson, both of Monticello; and a host of other cousins, relatives and friends.

Smith and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
