Hurricanes Lose Region Competition to Elbert

On a wet field and with dedicated fans in the stands, the Hurricanes lost at home 35-18 to Elbert County on Friday night.

The Hurricanes started the game with a kick off to Elbert County. Three minutes later Elbert scored the first touchdown of the game with a 25 yard rushing touchdown. A good point after kick and the first seven points on the scoreboard belonged to Elbert. Seven minutes later Monticello was on the board with their own rushing touchdown. The point after was no good and the end of the first quarter it was Monticello 6, Elbert 7.

At the start of the second quarter, the Canes, punting to Elbert, fell behind 14-6 after they found the end zone and followed up with a good extra point. A second punt by the Canes found Elbert scoring again and after the extra point kick made it through the goal post, the score was 21-6.

At the end of the second quarter, Elbert turned possession over on downs to the Canes whose quarterback Keyshawn Ammons completed a three yard pass to Mac Barton for their second touchdown. A missed two point conversion by the Canes had the score 21-12, Elbert, going into halftime.

The Canes received the kick off to start the third quarter. A few punts later by both teams found the Canes in possession on Elbert’s 33 yard line. A fumble by the Canes, recovered by Elbert on their own 30 yard line, set up their fourth touchdown of the night. A good point after made the score 28-12.

The Hurricanes started things off for fourth quarter action, scoring their third touchdown of the game with Marco Greene carrying the ball into the end zone on a four yard rushing touchdown. A failed two point conversion and it’s the Canes 18, Elbert 28. Elbert quickly responded with a 28 yard rushing touchdown of their own and a good point after kick, that put Elbert in the lead for good and a win.

The Hurricanes, 1-7, travel to Homer on Friday, Nov. 1, to play against the Banks County Leopards, 3-5, for a AA Region 8 game. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
